Episode 07: All About Appaloosas
Hello! Welcome to Flip N Tails: a tiny podcast for BIG horse lovers! I’m a horse girl who loves to ride and each week I’ll share about what I learn and love about horses. Today’s episode is number seven and it’s all about Appaloosas.
What I love about Appaloosas
Well, I love their color whenever I see them they’re so pretty. Because they’re graceful and they have the really pretty colors that you can see.
What are Appaloosas? A horse or a pony?
They are a horse and you may think they’re a pony because of their size, but they’re a horse and they stand at about 14 hands.
Describe them
Well they’re black, they're white, they’re brown, they’re charcoal and did you know, fun fact, that not all spotted horses are Appaloosas.
What are they known for?
They’re from the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. There’s also evidence of spotted horses all over the world.
What are they know for?
Appaloosas are known for English and Western riding and there’s even a barrel race that’s made just for them.
What makes them different?
Well, their color makes them different from a horse like a Thoroughbred because a Thoroughbred maybe has a solid color like a chestnut or a bay, whereas Appaloosas have different colors spotted all over their body. If you want to learn more about color patterns on horses go to Episode 4: All About Paint Horses.
What makes them so cool?
There’s two patterns: There is a leopard pattern and then there’s a blanket pattern. And the leopard pattern is like a leopard, and the blanket pattern is like if you were to lay a blanket down on the back of a horse.
Famous example of an Appaloosa
Some of you guys have probably heard of this big group of dolls called the American Girl Dolls. They were based off stories in history about girls. One of them was a girl called Kaya, and she was a member of the Nez Perce tribe. And in the story she had an Appaloosa called Steps High.
So that’s it! Now you know a tiny bit more about this special horse. Join us next time and subscribe for another episode of Flip N Tails: a tiny podcast for BIG horse lovers!
