Episode 06: All About A Horsey Halloween
Hello! Welcome to Flip N Tails: a tiny podcast for BIG horse lovers! I’m a horse girl who loves to ride and each week I’ll share about what I learn and love about horses. Today’s episode is number six and it’s all about a horsey Halloween.
Halloween Horse Joke
I heard a Halloween horse joke and it goes like this. Instead of yelling “Boo!” this Halloween, yell something even scarier like “no stirrups!” or “Chestnut Mare!” haha
Celebrating Halloween
We celebrate Halloween here in the US where you dress up in a costume, you go up to a house and you say “Trick or Treat!”. And then they bring out a basket of candy. And they give you some in a basket that you carry around in your neighborhood.
How would you have a Halloween with your horse?
At our barn we basically do a fall festival sort of where they dress up the horses in different costumes and then they lead it around so you can see different things. And then you can go inside and they are doing big jumping and stuff and then you can decorate pumpkins.
So these are some ideas for costumes
You can dress it up like a clown. You can dress it up like a bird. You can dress it up like a skeleton…
What are some good treats for horses?
I’ve heard that some good treats are apples, carrots, watermelon, pears…
You can dress it up like a jockey maybe. You can dress it up like a dragon. You can dress it up like a Barbie…
Spooky Stories
You know when I think about Halloween, I think about spooky stories. And spooky stories remind me of magic and things that wouldn’t happen in any ordinary day. In Episode 5: All About Hanoverians, we talked about the Brothers Grimm. They had some folktales or stories that were like that and one of them was Cinderella.
Andalusians
That reminded me of a horse an Andalusian because sometimes with the white manes, the long manes and the big bodies I think of Andalusians. And that’s probably because Andalusians are like magical horses with long flowing hair and they looked like they didn’t exist because they were just so beautiful! You know what, maybe I should do an episode about them..
You can dress it up like a dolphin. You can dress it up like a unicorn… haha
Here’s a ghost story I have about horses:
Once upon a time there was a horse. And the owner of that horse was a little girl. And that little girl went on a walk in the woods. She saw a squirrel that scattered across the woods. And then she saw three crows going in front of her. And she thought: Wait a second, if crows and squirrels and chipmunks and foxes are all running not towards me, then could something be happening behind me? And so she looked behind and what she saw was a very scary white horse that looked almost like a ghost, it was see-through. So she ran to her house and she told her mom, “Mom! Mom! I saw a horse today! And her mom said “Cool” And she was like “No! No! No! It was a GHOST and it was see-through and I couldn’t see it, and it was white! And she’s like “cool, sure, yeah, uh huh”. And so legend says that that horse is still roaming in the woods scaring off foxes, chipmunks, squirrels and crows and other sorts of animals.
Brooms and Cats:
Whenever I hear people talking about Halloween, they talk about brooms and cats. I sometimes think that the barn is a magical space like that because it has cats, like barn cats, and then it has brooms to sweep with. I have a black cat in my barn. And her name is Rex, and she’s really sweet and she always gives me a magical vibe sort of because she’s a black cat and I always think of witches and Halloween whenever I see her.
So that’s it! Now you know a tiny bit more about this fun thing for your horse. Join us next time and subscribe for another episode of Flip N Tails: a tiny podcast for BIG horse lovers!
