Episode 04: All About Paint Horses

Hello! Welcome to Flip N Tails: a tiny podcast for BIG horse lovers! I’m a horse girl who loves to ride and each week I’ll share about what I learn and love about horses. Today’s episode number is number four and it’s all about Paint horses. I’m super excited for this one.

What do they look like?

If you guys have ever seen the Disney movie Hidalgo it’s about a horse that is doing a race over 3,000 miles and there were five different horse actors that played that were Paint horses. So if you’ve seen that movie, you know what a Paint horse looks like.

What are they known for?

Well I’ve actually heard that Paints can do English riding, but I’ve known that they are actually mostly made for Western riding because they’re really good at their angles and turns to round up cattle and stuff and they’re very fast so if another horse runs off or if a cow runs off or something, they’re good at running.

What I love about Paints

They’re very graceful. They’re kind. They’re very colorful. They’re pretty. They’re fun. They’re good for beginners. They’re so colorful. They come in so many different colors like black and white, palomino and white, gray and white, bay and white, okay haha I just really love their colors because you can tell it’s them out of lots of different colors.

What’s the difference between Paint and Pinto?

Well Paint is a breed. Pinto is a type of color pattern on a horse’s body. Fun Fact: Did you know that Paint horses don’t have to be two or three or four or five different colors. They can only just be one color.

What makes them so cool?

Paints usually have Quarter Horses or Thoroughbred ancestors which means their body shape is close to a Thoroughbred or a Quarter Horse. So if you’ve seen a Thoroughbred or a Quarter Horse and you look at a Paint and you’re like: “heyyyy those kinda look the same” Well you should remember this because those were ancestors. If you want to learn more about Thoroughbreds then listen to Episode 1, All about Thoroughbreds.

I know a few Paint horses

So believe it or not, I know a couple of Paint horses. So there’s one chestnut one that I used to not even believe it was a Paint, but it is. And why I didn’t believe it was a Paint was because it didn’t have two different colors but like I said earlier, Fun Fact, a Paint doesn’t have to have two colors to be a Paint. There’s also another Paint horse in my life that is a Palomino Paint that has white and that pretty golden orange tannish color sort of kind of like that.

One is kind of a budger that when whenever the other one is getting love it’s kind of like hey get out of the way I want love. And the other one is more like “Hi, how you doin today, wanna jump on my back?, maybe have a cantering ride on the beach during a beach ride during a sunset while eating an icream sundae?” hahah.

A famous Paint

If you guys have ever watched the Netflix series Spirit Riding Free and you know the young girl that was in there, her name is Abigail. If you guys have watched that then you know her horse is named Boomerang. And Boomerang was a Paint. So again, if you’ve seen that show, then you know what a Paint looks like. Just in animation.

So that’s it! Now you know a tiny bit more about this special horse. Join us next time and subscribe for another episode of Flip N Tails: a tiny podcast for BIG horse lovers!
